Find Your Perfect Gas Fire Bowl in 4 Easy Steps

Choosing a gas fire bowl can seem daunting, but Lux Yard and Homes can help! We've laid out a simple 4-step process to find the ideal fire pit for your outdoor space and preferences.

Step 1: Burner Style - Classic or Dramatic?

Fire pit burners come in two main styles to suit your preference:

  • Standard Burner: This reliable option provides a classic flame pattern, perfect for those who prefer a traditional look.
  • Torpedo Burner: If you're looking for a more dramatic effect, the Torpedo Burner creates a bold, swirling flame that adds a touch of excitement to your fire pit.

Step 2: Pick Your Spark

HPC Fire's Mesa fire bowl pits come with two ignition choices. Both featuring HPC Fire's signature 12-inch diameter Penta burner on an 18-inch flat pan.

  • Match Lit: This option uses a standard knob for gas on/off and flame adjustment. It's a familiar and easy-to-use system.

  • Electronic Ignition: Enjoy the convenience of turning on your fire pit with a wall switch, remote control (optional), or even your smart home system. This system also provides continuous safety monitoring. If the flame goes out, the gas supply shuts off automatically and attempts to reignite itself.

Step 3: Choose Your Power Source (if you chose Electric Ignition)

The electronic ignition system comes in two voltage options:

  • 120vac: This standard option uses a regular outdoor power cord that plugs into a GFCI outlet.

  • 24vac: This lower voltage option might be suitable for specific setups.

Peace of Mind and Flexibility:

Both ignition systems are CSA certified, available in natural gas or propane versions, and put out 50,000 BTUs of heat. They're suitable for both residential and commercial use.

Step 4: Choosing Your Fire Pit Fuel

Fire pits can be fuelled by either natural gas or propane, each with its own advantages.

  • Natural Gas:

    • Ideal for permanent fire pit locations where a natural gas line is already installed.
    • This is a more cost-effective option in the long run.
  • Propane:

    • Perfect for portable fire pits or if you don't have a natural gas line nearby.
    • Propane fire pits are easier to set up and use.
    • Keep in mind that propane fuel costs tend to be higher than natural gas.

Round Fire Pit Table FAQs Answered

What shape should a fire pit be?

Shape depends on your priorities! Here's a quick breakdown:

  • Round Fire Pits: Classic choice for even heat distribution and social gatherings. Ideal for open areas.
  • Square/Rectangular Fire Pits: Maximize space against walls or patios, often modern aesthetic. Good for square/rectangular seating arrangements.

Consider these factors when choosing:

  • Space: Round pits work well in open areas, while square/rectangular fit better against walls.
  • Seating: Round pits encourage gathering around the fire, while square/rectangular suit square/rectangular seating.
  • Style: Round pits have a traditional look, while square/rectangular have a more modern aesthetic.

Ultimately, the best shape for your fire pit table depends on your needs and preferences!

How to Stop Grass Burning Under a Round Fire Pit Table?

Keeping your grass safe while enjoying your round fire pit table is essential. Here's how to prevent grass burning:

Never Place Directly on Grass: This is the most important rule. The intense heat will damage or burn the grass, potentially causing a fire.

Use a Fire-Resistant Surface: Invest in a fire pit pad specifically designed for fire pits. These pads come in various materials like stone pavers, concrete slabs, or even metal fire rings.

Maintain Safe Distance: Always keep your fire pit table at a safe distance from flammable objects, including grass. Check your local fire codes for specific clearance requirements, but generally, a minimum of 10-25 feet from structures and vegetation is recommended.

Additional Tips:

  • Elevated Fire Pit Table: If your fire pit table has a built-in base, ensure it elevates the fire pit high enough to prevent heat from reaching the grass.
  • Avoid Windy Days: Strong winds can easily carry embers and ignite dry grass. Opt for using your fire pit table on calmer days.
  • Keep Water Nearby: Always have a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher close by in case of emergencies.

By following these simple steps, you can enjoy the warmth and ambiance of your round fire pit table safely and ensure the health of your lawn.

Can you burn a fire pit under a covered patio?

It depends on the type of fire pit:

  • Wood-burning fire pits: It's generally not safe to burn a wood-burning fire pit under a covered patio due to smoke build up, heat accumulation, and the risk of embers igniting flammable materials.
  • Gas or propane fire pits: These can potentially be used under a covered patio, but with important safety considerations:

Here are some additional safety tips:

  • Maintain a Safe Distance: Even with a gas fire pit, keep your fire pit at a safe distance from flammable objects like furniture, decorations, and walls.
  • Ventilation: If possible, ensure some level of ventilation in your covered patio to help manage smoke and heat.

Remember: Safety is paramount. Always prioritize proper ventilation and clearance when using a gas fire pit under a covered patio, and adhere to local regulations and manufacturer instructions.

Do You Let a Fire Pit Burn Out?

Yes, it's the safest way to extinguish a fire pit. Here's why:

  • Safety: Letting the fire burn out naturally avoids using water, which can cause hot coals and embers to crackle and potentially spread.
  • Efficiency: Water can turn hot coals to steam, making it harder to completely extinguish the fire.

Here's how to properly let your fire pit burn out:

  • Stop adding fuel: Don't add any more wood or logs to the fire.
  • Let it cool: Allow the fire to burn down until the coals are cool to the touch (no embers). This can take several hours.
  • Check for embers: Use a metal tool to spread the ashes and double-check for any remaining hot embers.

Alternative (if necessary):

  • Sand or Gravel: If you need to extinguish the fire faster, carefully pour sand or gravel over the coals to smother them. Never use water.

Remember: Always have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies. Check your local fire codes for any specific regulations on extinguishing fire pits.
